So this is the easiest movie review I’ve ever had to write. Why? Because the documentary film “Racing Dreams” is so wonderful. I absolutely loved it. “Racing Dreams” follows three young aspiring NASCAR drivers as they compete for the championship in the World Karting Association’s National Series.
There’s 13-year-old Brandon, 12-year-old Josh and 11-year-old Annabeth, all of whom tugged at my heart for completely different reasons. Their stories are the kind you hear about now from NASCAR’s top drivers when they talk about what they did growing up and what their family sacrificed so they could attempt to compete at NASCAR’s highest level.
So many things happen in this film and I really don’t want to give any of it away because I want you to experience it for yourself. I hate reviews that basically say everything, then you’re anticipating it and then it doesn’t have the same effect as if you went in clean. But I have to say that one moment that involved Josh, the extremely poised kid who already has post-race pressers nailed, made me cry but in a totally good way.
And speaking of emotions, they run the gamut in this film. It’s funny, heartwarming and just plain engaging. I want to know more about these kids and what happens next for them. It definitely leaves you wanting more.
If you’re a fan of racing, in any form, you have to see this film. “Racing Dreams” was chosen as best documentary at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival (the film festival created by Robert De Niro). It was directed by Academy Award-nominated director Marshall Curry and executive produced by Dwayne Johnson (also known as The Rock).
