my reaction to the hendrick motorsports crew chief swap of 2010

Last week was pretty hectic for me, hence the lack of posts. Between making the turkey (using a brine is the only way to go) for Thanksgiving and then helping my mom get married on Saturday I’ve been a busy little bee!

So I haven’t had much time to think about all of the ramifications of the changes that were announced at Hendrick Motorsports last week.

But my reaction went something like this:

I can’t tell you how long I’ve been waiting to use that animation of Pee Wee! :) Cracks me up every time I see it and in this case it totally sums up my feelings when I heard the news. On one hand I was thinking it might be better for Dale Earnhardt Jr. to get Alan Gustafson, but I trust that Rick Hendrick knows what he’s doing. I love all of the new pairings and I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes of it. The teams of the 88 and 24 can definitely use the new energy, so I’m excited.

    First, congratulations to your mom!

Second, LOVE that PeeWee animation! Fun and silly movie.

At first I was a bit surprised with the big Hendrick shakeup, but after thinking about it for a few minutes, it made sense. The bigger surprise was the shifting of the shops. 24/5 and 48/8.

I hope Jeff Gordon and Alan Gustafson can develop a great chemistry and get some more wins for the 24 team. Not surprised they have Lance McGrew with Mark Martin. If what I hear is true, then Kenny Francis will be coming over to Hendrick in 2012 with Kasey, and McGrew will be out. Letarte has shown he can be a good crew chief, but there has been something missing between him & Jeff Gordon for a while now. I hope he and Jr. will work out better.

I expected we’d see Junior’s crew chief change. He pretty well told us that would be happening. I was pretty shocked that, except for Jimmie’s team, there was a pretty large shake-up on all of the teams. My thinking (or maybe it was my hope) was that Junior would end up with Alan. I assumed that mostly because I figure Kenny Francis is coming with Kasey to HMS and I doubt they would remove Alan from the pit box. It still sounds like the change makes room for that but I didn’t expect Steve & Jeff to be separated (or Jimmie & Jeff, for that matter). Just crazy! I’m looking forward to seeing how Steve & Junior do next year! Should be interesting to see if Junior can keep from cussing for Steve’s kids. Haha.
