interview: inside the actor’s studio with kurt busch

Kurt BuschKurt Busch is a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver for Penske Racing. 2010 was his last year in the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge, this year he takes on the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Dodge (as you can see in the photo at left).

“I am honored to represent the Shell and Pennzoil brands in the NASCAR Cup Series starting in 2011,” said Busch. “I look forward to building on the success of our storied past at Penske Racing with our new sponsors at Shell and Pennzoil.”

This was by far the fastest interview I’ve ever transcribed, I didn’t realize he was so speedy about it until just now. I liked his answer for the last question, I don’t think anyone’s answered it that way ’til now.

What is your favorite word? “Let’s do it.”

What is your least favorite word? “I don’t want to.”

What turns you on? Family

What turns you off? The travel

What sound or noise do you love? Race cars

What sound or noise do you hate? My alarm clock

What is your favorite curse word? Oh, hell.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Baseball

What profession would you not like to do? Hockey

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? I’m proud of you, son.

2011 Hottest Driver Tournament Brackets - Round Two

And now, I think this is when things are going to get even MORE interesting. Round Two is the largest group, it’ll be fun to see who makes it into Round Three. I was going to let Round Two last for two weeks but I have decided to run it for just a week. Votes poured in for Round One and I can only expect it to get crazier for this one, so I’m trying to contain it. Plus I’m highly impatient and two weeks sound like forever to find out the results.

So let’s get to it! Here are the match-ups for Round Two! You can vote as many times as you want each day until voting ends on Saturday, January 15th.

interview: inside the actor’s studio with chad knaus

Chad Knaus with his girlfriend, Lisa RockelmannChad Knaus is the spectacularly successful crew chief of the No. 48 Lowe’s team at Hendrick Motorsports. He celebrated the team’s fifth-straight NASAR Sprint Cup Series Championship with his driver, Jimmie Johnson, in Las Vegas for Champion’s Week which is where this interview occurred.

My only regret was not getting to interview Jimmie with the same questions as he was seated right next to Chad in the press room. Jimmie wasn’t occupied with anyone during my time with Chad and I can’t for the life of me remember why I didn’t just go to him next, he must of started talking to someone and I didn’t want to wait is my best guess.

Anyway, the interview with Chad was great as you can read/see below. He hasn’t been “turned off” in quite some time. :)

What is your favorite word? No

What is your least favorite word? No. Being told “No.” *laughter*

What turns you on? Winning

What turns you off? Losing

What sound or noise do you love? I love the sound of the ocean.

What sound or noise do you hate? People arguing.

What is your favorite curse word? I don’t think I can say that. *laughter* Favorite curse word? Probably “Damnit.”

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? I would like to at some point to get to work inside a business environment, be a board member or something along those lines.

What profession would you not like to do? Work in a factory.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? Good job.

they’re letting ball players be gillette young guns?? what?

Awww, man! The only NASCAR drivers included in the Gillette Young Guns “Class of 2011″ are Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch. Nothing against them, of course. I’m just sad that Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer and Carl Edwards aren’t included.
:)

Still, I think Denny and Kyle do a good job of representing NASCAR.

Here’s the video introducing the new Young Guns and after that is a behind the scenes video with Denny and Kyle.

interview: inside the actor’s studio with clint bowyer

Clint Bowyer (credit: The Fast and the Fabulous)Clint Bowyer, driver of the No. 33 Cheerios Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, is a character for sure. He’s a funny guy and I’m really happy with how this interview turned out–I laughed while I transcribed it! Hopefully all of that comes through. In addition to the questions below I asked Clint if he had any special plans for the off-season and he said, “Whatever I want, that’s what’s nice about the off-season you have the opportunity to do whatever you want for a while.”

This ranks up there as one of my favorites for sure. I had to leave in our conversation about these answers because without it, it just wouldn’t make sense and it makes it funnier. :)

What is your favorite word? *laughter* I can’t tell you

What is your least favorite word? No

What turns you on? Everything. Well, this is not fair! *laughter* (Me: Yes it is!) What turns me on? Uh, cars.

What turns you off? Penalties. Penalties suck.

What sound or noise do you love? An engine turning 9500 RPM.

What sound or noise do you hate? An engine expiring.

What is your favorite curse word? I cannot tell you that. I like ‘em all. I put ‘em all in play, put it that way.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? *laughter* I don’t know, give me a good one, what would you do? You gotta help me sound cool. (Me: Uhh, I don’t know, an actor?) Uh, a rockstar.

What profession would you not like to do? Uh, man. How about that one, what profession would we not want to do? This is collective group effort. (Me: I’ve heard sewage stuff, trash collector) I was going to say shit hauler would be bad. Shit hauler. Is this going to be on, like, public record? (Me: It’s going to be on a blog on the internet, it’s going to be there forever) Oh great, the internet’s forever? I don’t know, help me come up with a better one then. (Me: An office job where you have to sit in one place?) Uhm, man, I don’t know. Try to keep track of me, put it that way.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? What would I like him to say? Welcome! *laughter*

2011 hottest driver tournament: round one

Hottest Driver LogoWho is the hottest, cutest, most-handsome driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series? I know who I think is the hottest, most-adorable driver in the series but if I just tell you what I think it’s boring and the fun only lasts for a few hours, or a day, tops. So instead I thought it would be way more fun if everyone voted!

I’ve randomly seeded 38 drivers into a single-elimination tournament. There will be six rounds of action before we crown a winner and each round will last at least one week. The second round will go on for two weeks because there are so many match-ups I want to make sure there’s enough time to get as many votes in as possible. You can vote as many times as you want and I strongly encourage you to do so every day. And as the rounds wind down be on the lookout for the opportunity to win a prize!

interview: inside the actor’s studio with kevin conway

Kevin ConwayRaybestos Rookie of the Year award-winner Kevin Conway started the 2010 season in the Sprint Cup Series driving for Front Row Motorsports but ended it with Robby Gordon Motorsports. I met Kevin in Las Vegas after the NMPA Myers Bros. Awards Luncheon where he officially received his Rookie of the Year award.

This is the second of my “Inside the Actor’s Studio” interviews that I did during Champion’s Week. There are many more to come so stay tuned. :)

What is your favorite word? This year I would have to say it’s been “Plethora” and I really don’t know why, it’s just been used a lot.

What is your least favorite word? Probably “hmm,” I hate it when a girl is like “hmm, hmm.”

What turns you on? Being competitive and winning races.

What turns you off? Negativity

What sound or noise do you love? Race cars

What sound or noise do you hate? Silence

What is your favorite curse word? The F-word can be used in so many different ways, so it’s probably the best 4-letter word because it’s used in many different ways.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? If I couldn’t be a race car driver I’d probably like to be a fighter pilot.

What profession would you not like to do? Anything in a cubicle or a desk job.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? Welcome, welcome home.

a ‘fabulous’ 2010 year in review

Doesn’t it feel like it was ten years ago that Jamie McMurray won the Daytona 500? The NASCAR season is so long that it’s hard to keep track of time, or to feel the weight of it, if that makes any sense. That makes it much more important to look back at the year that was and remember the best moments. This is one of my favorite posts to write because I get to highlight all the posts that I loved writing this year, and remembering something happy makes you feel good. This has been THE hardest year of my life, to the point that I even thought about not writing anymore, and I want to make sure I remember those times that made me feel alive in a good way. Hopefully 2011 will bring more of them!

– Hard Card Credibility: I got one! Woo-hoo! Starting the year with “Get a hard card” checked off my list of goals was pretty awesome.

– Charlotte Adventure: Surreal is the best and only way to describe landing in Charlotte, North Carolina to attend the All-Star Race, the inaugural NASCAR Hall of Fame induction ceremony AND the Coca-Cola 600. I had a lot of fun exploring Charlotte and the surrounding areas. Other races/events I attended this year were the Pepsi Max 400 at Auto Club Speedway, the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway, the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon (Just realized that I never wrote about my second day at the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, whoops!), and the 2010 NASCAR Champion’s Week in Las Vegas.

Tony Stewart and Me– Inside the Actor’s Studio with Tony Stewart: Thanks to Office Depot, While I was in Charlotte I had the opportunity to interview Tony Stewart for the very first time. It far exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds. My worst fear was that it ended up on the crappy end of the spectrum of Tony Stewart interviews (something like this), but it was the complete opposite and Tony’s comments seriously made my life. I’m so thankful for that day because it spawned a whole new feature for this site, “Inside the Actor’s Studio with…” Since Tony I’ve published interviews with Martin Truex Jr, David Reutimann, Regan Smith, AJ Allmendinger, Elliott Sadler, Chip Ganassi, Juan Pablo Montoya, Marcos Ambrose, David Gilliland, Travis Kvapil, Brad Keselowski, Brad Daugherty, Marty Smith, Shannon Spake and Jeff Burton. More to come in 2011!

– Favorite Things Posts: These were the posts that I loved because they were either fun to write, made me laugh or both:

– Nationwide Series Driver Interviews: Curiosity should be my middle name, it’s pretty much what drives me and it’s what motivated me to interview a few of the drivers in the Nationwide Series. For 2011 Michael Annett will join Rusty Wallace Racing, Brian Scott has moved to Joe Gibbs Racing and Scott Lagasse Jr. is working on his NASCAR plans.

– Speaking Up: I had two very awesome opportunities to speak on panels about sports blogging. I can’t tell you how much fun it is to talk about NASCAR and my brand of writing. I absolutely love it and I’m so appreciative of the opportunity that the guys at Blogs with Balls, and the women at Blog World & New Media Expo, gave me to be a part of their events. There’s video of my panel at Blogs with Balls in my post about the experience.

Another reason to “speak up” is when you encounter an actual nut-job stalker stalking someone, in this case Danica Patrick. I still can’t believe that happened, but I’m also glad that nothing bad happened.

– Reader Survey: Thank you to everyone that has taken the reader survey for 2010! I appreciate your time and insight into what I’m doing right and what I could do better with this site. It helps a lot to know who you are and where I stand with you guys. If you haven’t taken the survey, do it now!

– ‘Fabulous’ News: Another task I checked off my list of “things to do” was the creation of ‘Fabulous’ News which allows anyone to quickly post their motorsports press releases, photos and videos to The Fast and the Fabulous.

– TWLOHA: I had a lot of apprehension about sharing my experience with suicide & depression with you guys because it is SO personal and I had no idea what the reaction would be. But I have so much respect and appreciation for what To Write Love on Her Arms does for people that have been in my situation that I felt like I had to show my support and I’m glad that I did. Whatever platform you have to help the causes you’re passionate about–whether that’s Facebook, Twitter or your blog–you should use them.

Thank you for a great year! :)

If you’re new here I suggest reading my year in review’s for 2008 and 2009, too.

bestcommercials_kkhane

the best commercials of 2010

This year’s crop of racing-related commercials found drivers singing, professing their love of love and playing poker with Big Foot. Here is my list of the best commercials of 2010:

Tony Stewart Burger King Employee
My absolute favorite commercial of the year because it was real. Tony really did work at a Burger King and the result was really funny. I know it would be copying but I really think Lowe’s should put Jimmie Johnson to work in one of their stores. He’d be great at selling appliances, dontcha think? :)

Toyota Sponsifier
The Sponsifier program was a big hit this year and it’s gotta be because their commercials were hilarious. I will never be able to get the line “I want Kyle Busch in a pink car and a pink suit” out of my mind or Joey Logano’s chainmail outfit and that look of utter disgust on his face.

Gillette Young Guns & Big Foot
Because Big Foot is a sore loser. I find that idea to be really funny. :)

Mario Andretti Honda
How adorable is Mario Andretti? Like, really adorable. All because he says “I’m hungry.” I love it.

Coca-Cola Drivers Sing it Out
People who can’t sing (or aren’t known for singing) and then unexpectedly start singing is a recipe for hilarity.

Honorable Mention: Gillette Young Guns Wedding
Because I just like Clint Bowyer in this one. We need more commercials with Clint flexing his funny bone in 2011!

a new ‘fabulous’ look for the new year

If you’re reading this on the Fast and the Fabulous website then you can see that I’ve made some changes (If you’re not then you should come on over and take a look).

I think this look is a better reflection of who I am and what the blog is all about. Plus, I was just really tired of all of the orange. I’m so over that color. :) I’m excited about the awesome featured post slideshow on the homepage. It makes me so happy, I can’t even tell you. I love the big photos I get to use there and underneath in the “Latest Posts” section.

In addition to the cosmetic changes, there are a couple technical alterations, too. The first, that affects you directly, is the ability to reply to comments. So if you agree or disagree with something someone else said you can reply to them directly by clicking the word “Reply” under their name. Your comment will be nested under the original comment, keeping the conversation neatly organized.

And if you want to have your own special avatar/profile image to show up with your comments just go over to Gravatar and create one! It’s super easy and free, just make sure you sign up with the same email address that you use when posting comments.

At the top of every post are a group of buttons that allow you to share the stuff you like via Facebook, Twitter, Del.icio.us, or StumbleUpon.

I hope you enjoy the new and improved Fast and the Fabulous! :)

what’s weezer doing in that izod indycar commercial?

These are photos from a photo/video/web shoot that IZOD did with a bunch of IndyCar drivers a couple weeks ago in the California desert for the 2011 IZOD IndyCar season. I had to share these for sure because I love great photos and Weezer is featured in a couple of them. That’s right Weezer, the band I love for “Undone–The Sweater Song” will be on your TV screens next year promoting IZOD and IndyCar. It’s an interesting combo, don’t you think?

interview: inside the actor’s studio with shannon spake

Shannon SpakeShannon Spake is a pit reporter for both the NASCAR Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series telecasts on ESPN and is a reporter for ESPN’s studio programs such as NASCAR Now, SportsCenter and ESPNEWS. She’s also a wife and a mother to twin boys who will celebrate their 1st birthday on New Year’s Day.

Shannon, just like her ESPN co-workers, was super nice and gracious. I asked to interview her and Marty Smith on the fly while in the press box at Auto Club Speedway back in October. So I really appreciated the time they took to answer these questions after I sprung the request on them out of the blue.

Again, more great answers!

:)

What is your favorite word? Determination

What is your least favorite word? Failure

What turns you on? Being completely satisfied in something I just accomplished.

What turns you off? Laziness

What sound or noise do you love? I have twin boys, the sound of them–whether it’s crying or laughing–just the sounds that they make.

What sound or noise do you hate? The sound of nails on a chalk board or knives on a plate.

What is your favorite curse word? A–hole.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Maybe an actor, I think. I think it would be fun to be on a movie set with everything being fake and so over the top, I think it would be fun to be a part of that world.

What profession would you not like to do? Anything that involves jumping out of airplanes or working at high levels because I’m really afraid of heights and so I think anything that involves being way up in the air in any way, I don’t think I’d be interested in that at all.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? You did well.

Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500 - Practice

interview: inside the actor’s studio with jeff burton

CONCORD, NC - OCTOBER 14: Jeff Burton, driver of the Caterpillar Chevrolet, strands in the garage during practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 14, 2010 in Concord, North Carolina. (Photo by Jerry Markland/Getty Images for NASCAR)Jeff Burton, driver of the No. 31 CAT Chevrolet Impala for Richard Childress Racing, is cool. He finished the year 12th in points and out of the drivers I interviewed in Las Vegas he struck me as the most “polished.” And I guess what I mean by that is that he was professional but relaxed and just himself. He just seemed the most mature, not that everyone else wasn’t it’s just that you understand why people always look to him for his opinions.

Later when I was interviewing Matt Kenseth, Jeff was standing nearby waiting to hear Matt’s answer for “favorite curse word.” When I asked Matt about what turns him off he had a hard time and looked to Jeff and said, “How can you answer these?” to which Jeff replied, “Everything’s not sexual, Matt.” It was so funny and all said with a laugh.

Tony Stewart and 2010 Office Depot Foundation Teddy B Caring Bear

christmas gift ideas for racing fans

Teddy B. Caring and Tony StewartChristmas is fast approaching and I thought I’d share with you some ideas I had for great gifts for NASCAR fans.

– Let’s start things off with two Tony Stewart-related gifts. First is the 2011 calendar I gave you guys a preview of last month that features exclusive photos of Tony. I love calendars, I think they make great presents because they last all year with something new to stare at (and daydream about) each month. The second gift is the 2010 “Teddy B. Caring Bear” from the Office Depot Foundation. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of the bear will go to children and families in need around the world. Teddy B. Caring was made by Gund (so you know he’s well made), costs only $9.99 and can be found at Office Depot stores.

“Working with the Office Depot Foundation on its National Backpack Program is one of the most important and rewarding things I do,” Stewart said. “It’s amazing to see the look on a child’s face when they receive a new backpack and are able to head back to school with an extra boost of confidence. Every child deserves that, and I would like to encourage everyone to consider giving a Teddy B. Caring bear as a gift this holiday season in support of the great work the Office Depot Foundation does all year long.”

the nascar connection on the latest season of ‘the bachelor’

Emily Maynard (Credit: ABC/TheBachelor)Ready your Tivo! NASCAR will be discussed on the upcoming season of “The Bachelor” on ABC. Brad Womack is back again to try and find a woman he’ll actually want to propose to this time around.

The connection to NASCAR comes from Emily Maynard, 24, the fiancee of the late Ricky Hendrick. Ricky, the son of NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick, died in a plane crash in 2004 along with nine other people. Five days after the tragic accident Emily found out that she was pregnant with Ricky’s child. Their daughter, Josephine Riddick “Ricki” Hendrick was born in June of 2005.

Emily briefly dated Dale Earnhardt Jr. and has had some racing-related jobs like hosting the TV show “Three Wide Life” and a podcast called “Emily on the Scene” for the SPEED channel.

Now Emily is one of 30 bachelorettes on the 15th season of “The Bachelor” vying for the affection of 37-year-old “drinking establishment” owner Brad Womack. I already know the outcome of the show thanks to websites that have all the spoilers, but I won’t spoil it for you here. To be honest, I’d rather watch the new season of “Wipeout.” But if you really want to know just Google it.

I certainly wish Emily all the best. I can say one thing for sure, if you take a look at all the women on the show, Emily is by far the prettiest. I’m just sayin’.

The show starts on Monday, January 3rd at 8pm ET. :) Thanks to Tara S. for the tip!

pass it along: sponsors wanted

On the Road with the Fast and the Fabulous imageI have a very simple idea: Starting with the Daytona 500 in February, I will attend all of the races on the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule, driving from race to race, living in the infield in an RV or travel trailer. I’ll write about my experiences in this blog, along with the usual photos, interviews, and new features like a “choose my adventure” poll where you guys would get to pick the activity I have to do, something different each month. Oh and ‘Fabulous’ Parties, where you could hang out with me and other NASCAR fans (maybe a driver??), eat (cupcakes!), drink and leave with a goodie bag.

NASCAR Champion Kurt Busch in New York City

nascar drivers share holiday memories

Chandra and Jimmie Johnson in Rockefeller Center, New York City in 2009Performance Racing Network gathered some NASCAR drivers holiday memories, thoughts, etc:

Jimmie Johnson
“I think I was five years old at Christmas, and walked out and under the tree there was a motorcycle sitting there for me. That’s what started racing for me, so that would probably be the most memorable. It really started everything. We’ve got some footage that’s absolutely hilarious of me riding that day. My parents took me out to an area to ride and I could ride a bicycle at the time, but my dad was holding the back fender and trying to show me how to twist the throttle and ride off. I can’t believe I was on a bike that young, but it’s pretty funny to see it.”

Denny Hamlin
“Yeah, I was one of those kids that was trying to wake up my parents and say ‘Alright it’s Christmas now’, ‘No, no, no, go back to bed.’ So, I definitely was antsy at times, but now they’re the ones that have to wake me up on Christmas morning. I say, ‘Alright’ and I just kinda walk there with my cap on and I’m like, ‘Alright, let’s get this over with, I want to get to the food.’”

interview: inside the actor’s studio with marty smith

ESPN's Marty SmithMarty Smith is a really nice guy. And I’m not just saying that because I know he’s going to read this at some point. I just appreciated how nice he was to me when I introduced myself to him during Champion’s Week last year and every time I’ve seen him since then he’s 1.) remembered me and 2.) stayed cool. Why is this important or notable? Because he doesn’t have to be like that. He could be a prima donna and he’s not.

Marty is a writer and reports for ESPN2′s daily NASCAR news and information program NASCAR Now, as well as SportsCenter, ESPN First Take, ESPNEWS and ESPN.com.

Marty’s interview was fun because his answers were really thoughtful. If you follow him on Twitter then you already know that he’s a serious fan, and friend, of country artist Eric Church which makes sense when you read his answer for the job he’d like to attempt. A fun fact is that he shares the same turn-off as his ESPN co-worker Brad Daugherty.

:)

What is your favorite word? Credibility

What is your least favorite word? Money. The reason that that is my least favorite word is because I think it drives the perception of worth entirely too much in our society. There’s a whole lot of things that are richer in life than green paper.

What turns you on? Intelligence

What turns you off? Haughtiness

What sound or noise do you love? My son and daughter’s laughter.

What sound or noise do you hate? Plastic being pulled across concrete.

What is your favorite curse word? The S-word.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? A country music songwriter in Nashville, who wrote songs that send a message, real and honest and far from pop, that offered truth about real-life issues and adversity and failure and triumph, that spoke to people on an intimate level and and didn’t dilute the highway of truth that country music is. Of course, I’d hope my songs were coveted by great artists, and actually recorded. For me, nothing triggers introspection and true emotion like a great song. Songwriters are the most talented people on Earth, as far as I’m concerned.

What profession would you not like to do? I would not like to be a doctor based on the fact that there is so much at stake.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? I appreciate the way you treated people while you were there. Thank you for your convictions. Come on in, brother!

nascar champion’s week: day two with discussions about underwear

NASCAR After The Lap started off mostly like last year, with hostess Jamie Little asking the drivers questions submitted by fans. my reaction to the hendrick motorsports crew chief swap of 2010

Last week was pretty hectic for me, hence the lack of posts. Between making the turkey (using a brine is the only way to go) for Thanksgiving and then helping my mom get married on Saturday I’ve been a busy little bee!

So I haven’t had much time to think about all of the ramifications of the changes that were announced at Hendrick Motorsports last week.

But my reaction went something like this:

I can’t tell you how long I’ve been waiting to use that animation of Pee Wee! :) Cracks me up every time I see it and in this case it totally sums up my feelings when I heard the news. On one hand I was thinking it might be better for Dale Earnhardt Jr. to get Alan Gustafson, but I trust that Rick Hendrick knows what he’s doing. I love all of the new pairings and I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes of it. The teams of the 88 and 24 can definitely use the new energy, so I’m excited.

pep talk: hamlin and harvick are so money

While I don’t think that Denny Hamlin or Kevin Harvick particularly need a pep talk at this point, they seem to have enough motivation on their own to win the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship over Jimmie Johnson, I’d still like to show them some support.

Which brings us to one of my favorite movies of all time: Swingers. The film stars Vince Vaughn (whom I adore and is hilarious) and Jon Favreau (whom I also adore and is now the amazingly talented director of hit movies, like the Iron Man series and the upcoming Cowboys & Aliens).

I am dedicating the following scene from Swingers to Denny and Kevin as extra oomph to go out there on Sunday and let the “bunny” know who’s boss.

NASCAR Now - 2007 -
Brad Daugherty

inside the actor’s studio with brad daugherty

Valli Hilaire interviews ESPN Analyst Brad Daughtery at Auto Club Speedway in October 2010 (credit: ESPN PR)I interviewed Brad Daugherty, NASCAR Race Analyst for ESPN, at Auto Club Speedway this year. We all know that Brad is a former professional basketball player and is really, really tall but it’s not until you meet him that you really, really realize it.

I’m sure Brad must be asked how tall is all the time and I didn’t want to ask him, but it just came out because, you guys, he’s REALLY tall. Seven feet tall to be exact. I’m 5’9” and he’s in the small group of people in this world that has ever made me feel small in their presence, as you can see from the photo at left.
:)
But more importantly Brad was a great interview. He’s super nice and not “haughty” at all, as you’ll see below.

What is your favorite word? Ancillary. I like to say ancillary. I use that a lot, even out of context.

What is your least favorite word? Surreptitiously. It’s a very difficult word, sounds really smart but it’s really difficult to say, especially when you’re on TV, so I try to stay away from that word.

What turns you on? Beautiful, sunny days like today, it really gets my attention. I feel good, really energized. I got up this morning and opened the blinds and saw the sunshine, it just really makes me feel good. About everything feels better, I went and ran this morning, felt great. I love a beautiful, sunny day.

What turns you off? Haughty* people. We meet a lot of successful people because of what I did playing pro basketball and what I do now. You meet a lot of people who think they’re successful because they’ve made a lot of money and there’s an air that comes with that that really irks me and bothers me.

What sound or noise do you love? I love the sound of a racecar, a racecar engine. I’ve been around the sport for 30 years and every time they say “gentlemen, start your engines” I still get goosebumps.

What sound or noise do you hate? Fingernails on a chalkboard.

What is your favorite curse word? I try not to curse, but I’m an old mountain boy so I say “Dang it” or “Daggum it” a lot, a lot. My kids have gotten me to say “Sugar” instead of saying the other word, so I say “Daggum it” and “Sugar” a lot.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Love to be a hunting or fishing guide somewhere in the world. I love the outdoors. I love to hunt and fish. And I’d love to spend enough time in one really isolated place that I knew the region well enough to guide and teach and help. Being a hunting and fishing guide would be awesome.

What profession would you not like to do? I would not like to tar roofs. I see those guys out there in the middle of the summer time taring roofs and that’s got to be a tough, tough job.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? When I do get there, I hope he has a great sense of humor and I’d like to hear him say, “You were not always right, you were very faulty, but I appreciate your heart and your effort,” and if he says that I’d be tickled.

*haugh·ty [haw-tee]
–adjective, -ti·er, -ti·est.
1. disdainfully proud; snobbish; scornfully arrogant; supercilious:
haughty aristocrats; a haughty salesclerk.

jimmie and the gang feel the pressure (yipee!)

FORT WORTH, TX - NOVEMBER 07: Crew members of the FedEx Office Toyota, celebrate in Victory Lane after winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on November 7, 2010 in Fort Worth, Texas. (Photo by Rusty Jarrett/Getty Images for NASCAR)I’m not going to lie, watching the 48 Lowe’s team experience failure in real time was fun. No, I don’t wish them ill and, really, really, who cares if I do? Dude, they’ve won the Championship 4 times in a row, they’ve got their place in history sealed for-ev-er. A little schadenfreude never hurt anyone.

It was clear that the 48′s cage was rattled with that pit crew swap happening in the middle of the race and watching Chad Knaus’ post-race interview was amazing. We got to find out what he looks, and sounds, like when he doesn’t have to pretend that the Championship isn’t a lock yet, because it really isn’t this time! (Ok, ok, so it’s not that different from when he’s on top, but there was a difference!)

Hehe. :)

Ya know what really irks me though? It’s when I think about what could have been had Clint Bowyer’s team not received that 150 point fine. Things would be so different, it’s so frustrating! Would I prefer that Kevin Harvick won the Championship over Denny Hamlin? Yes, but I’ll take what I can get. I so wish I was going to Phoenix this week, and hell, Miami too. Just promise me that when I do get to go to every NASCAR race the Championship is as close then as it is now.

:)

if jimmie johnson isn’t vanilla, then what flavor is he?

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 10: Dale Earnhardt Jr #88 Energy Chevrolet and Denny Hamlin #11 FedEx Toyota practice an ice cream throwing stunt backstage prior to their apperance on 'Live with Regis and Kelly' during the NASCAR Chase Media Tour on September 10, 2008 in New York City. (Photo by Mike Stobe/Getty Images for NASCAR)As the campaign to prove that Jimmie Johnson isn’t vanilla rolls on, I thought it would be fun to assign an ice cream flavor to each of the drivers in The Chase for the Sprint Cup Series Championship.

I don’t know why Jimmie would mind being vanilla, I mean, it’s a classic and reliable flavor (how do you mess up vanilla??). It’s a trusty, go-to flavor, and doesn’t that make sense for him since we rely on him to win all the time? I’m just sayin’.

1.) Jimmie Johnson – Ben & Jerry’s New York Super Fudge Chunk: He has a house in New York and this is as far away from Vanilla as possible. Happy, Jimmie?? :)

2.) Denny Hamlin – Ben & Jerry’s Neapolitan Dynamite: Because Denny is the only one that sort of reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite.

3.) Kevin Harvick – Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby: He’s not chubby, but he is a hubby.

4.) Jeff Gordon – Rocky Road: It’s been one for, like, the past 2 or 3 years, right?

5.) Kyle Busch – Pistachio: I’m not a fan of Pistachio

6.) Carl Edwards – Vanilla frozen yogurt: Carl is all about eating healthy (Subway!), and staying ab-tacular, so this is all he can have. :)

7.) Tony Stewart – Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey: He had a monkey once.

8.) Matt Kenseth – Ben & Jerry’s Imagine Whirled Peace: He never gets into fights, ok there was that time with Jeff Gordon, but overall Kenseth is Switzerland.

9.) Kurt Busch – Rum Raisin: Alcohol, there’s no such thing as beer ice cream. :)

10.) Jeff Burton – Ben & Jerry’s Stephen Colbert’s AmeriCone Dream: This happens to be my favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor and it’s also the only flavor that is remotely related to politics, and ya know Jeff Burton will be a politician somewhere, someday. Just go with me on this OK?

11.) Greg Biffle – Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food: Can’t you imagine Biffle relaxin’ with some of this yummy chocolately, caramely, marshmallowy, fudge fishy goodness?

12. ) Clint Bowyer – Ben & Jerry’s Maple Blondie: He’s blonde, duh.

KANSAS CITY, KS - OCTOBER 02: Brad Keselowski, driver of the Penske Dodge, stands in the garage during practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Price Chopper 400 on October 2, 2010 in Kansas City, Kansas. (Photo by Todd Warshaw/Getty Images)So this was my favorite driver interview with the ITAS questions, so far. Brad Keselowski drives the No. 12 Penske Dodge in the Sprint Cup Series, and the No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge in the Nationwide Series for Penske Racing. With only 3 races left, Brad is on track to win his first NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship this year (he’s 485 points ahead of Carl Edwards, so this is a lock).

I met him outside of his hauler after his qualifying attempt at Auto Club Speedway for the Pepsi Max 400 last month. I wasn’t sure what to expect from him, I guess I thought he might be kinda boring. I don’t know why I thought that but he was really fun and gave some interesting answers as you’ll see below. I guess I was surprised by how relaxed and conversational he was, there were no walls up or some sort of facade. He was really nice and now that I know how he is, I want to ask him, like, way more questions.

you call that a ‘big one?’

TALLADEGA, AL - OCTOBER 31: A.J. Allmendinger, driver of the Valvoline Ford, flips in the air after an incident in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AMP Energy Juice 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on October 31, 2010 in Talladega, Alabama. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)No, I’m not talking about Brett Favre’s penis. :)

While AJ Allmendinger’s crashy-crash on the last lap of the AMP Energy Juice 500 at Talladega was indeed a gnarly crash it didn’t add up to a “big one.” I choose to believe it’s because the usual ginormous crashes that take out large chunks of the field were talked up so much that that is why one didn’t happen. So I think next year we should all act like Talladega is just like Michigan and not say boo about anything “big.”

:)

How excited are you that Denny Hamlin is only 14 measly points behind Jimmie Johnson going to Texas this week? And Kevin Harvick is right there, just 38 points behind. This is awesomeness and I’m afraid to talk about it for fear that it won’t stay awesome. So I’m leaving it at that. This is great, this is interesting, this is fun and it’s what we need.

On another note in regards to Jimmie. Don’t you think he looks like Elvis when he’s not wearing a hat? That hair and that beard, I just keep thinking about Elvis when I look at him.

:)

INDIANAPOLIS - JULY 25: Travis Kvapil, driver of the Long John Silver's Ford, stands by his car during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 25, 2010 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by John Harrelson/Getty Images for NASCAR)Travis Kvapil drives the No. 34 Long John Silver’s Ford for Front Row Motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Travis was the first driver I’d interviewed at Auto Club Speedway during the Pepsi Max 400 race weekend and he was also the first driver to say that his wife was what turns him on. That ended up being a popular answer that weekend.

You can tell from this interview that Travis is big family guy and loves his children, Kelsey, Carson and Caden, dearly. So much so that he was the subject of a post about that fact over at the Yahoo! motorsports blog From the Marbles.

I dug his answer for least favorite word, I need to remember that saying. Seriously, between Travis and David Gilliland, the drivers at Front Row Motorsports are really helping me become a better person!

:)

What is your favorite word? Green, Green, Green (He loves to hear that every Sunday)

What is your least favorite word? Can’t. I preach to my daughter “can’t never does.”

What turns you on? My wife and fast cars.

What turns you off? Pessimistic, downer-type people.

What sound or noise do you love? Race car engines and probably just my kids running around the house playing.

What sound or noise do you hate? Two or three in the morning when the kids wake up crying from being sick.

What is your favorite curse word? Definitely the F-bomb. I overuse it and I try not to so much around the kids for sure.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? I’d like to be a pro football player, a quarterback. I think that’d be awesome.

What profession would you not like to do? Not because it’s that crummy of a job, but a truck driver or freight hauler where you’d be away from your family for a long time.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? Welcome.

HOLLYWOOD - OCTOBER 06: Racecar driver Juan Pablo Montoya attends the Auto Club Speedway and Tissot Event at Voyeur on October 6, 2010 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Jason Merritt/Getty Images)Now that I’ve finally finished my writeups of the Pepsi Max 400 race weekend at Auto Club Speedway I can finally get to my the interviews I did while I was there.

My interview with Juan Pablo Montoya, driver of the No. 42 Target Chevy for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, was VERY fun as you’ll see below. That guy had some great answers. But another interesting story I heard about Juan Pablo came from a conversation I had with a German journalist covering the race that weekend. We chatted about Formula 1 racing and how they treat the media (not very well at all) and the difference between interviewing F1 drivers and NASCAR drivers, more specifically how Juan Pablo has changed as an interviewee since leaving F1 and coming to NASCAR. The journalist told me how surprised he was to find a much more chatty Juan Pablo that weekend than he had met back in his F1 days, a time when you’d leave the interview wondering why you bothered in the first place.

I’m so glad I got to meet the more relaxed Juan Pablo! :)

double j zips up, couples take the plunge at auto club speedway

Carl Edwards waits to be interviewed post-qualifying for the CampingWorld.com 300 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. on Saturday, October 9, 2010 (credit: The Fast and the Fabulous)Saturday morning at Auto Club Speedway found me inside the Nationwide Series garage watching as drivers qualified for the CampingWorld.com 300. Driver after driver made their qualifying run and I stood by in the media bullpen area where they keep the top-3 cars. Cars shuffle in and out (and drive by) as the numbers on the pylon change order.

There weren’t a lot of fans milling around in the garage and only a handful actually stuck around to watch drivers get out of their cars and maybe ask them for an autograph. I noticed David Reutimann, in regular dude clothes, standing with the guys from Michael Waltrip Racing. He had on a hat and sunglasses but I still couldn’t get over the fact that people didn’t notice him. I guess it was good for him to not be bothered, seeing as how he’d just come off the weekend before and his infamous incident with Kyle Busch.

As qualifying progressed I watched as Carl Edwards got out of his car, spoke with various members of the media, signed autographs for fans, met with a large group of employees from his sponsor, Copart, took pictures with them, and then went off to the media center. All of that took place in the space of like 10 minutes. Now that’s multi-tasking.

why delana and kevin harvick are the tops

Auto Club Speedway (credit: The Fast and the Fabulous)Something I’ve noticed as I go to more races is that I take less pictures. In the beginning I was taking photos of everything; tires, cars, etc. But now that I know the pain of uploading those photos to Flickr and having to write a title for each one, I’m a lot more discerning when it comes to choosing a photo subject.

My Friday at Auto Club Speedway (ACS) began with me walking from my car to the garage and happening to see Travis Kvapil walking out of the drivers/owners motorcoach lot at the same time. I was set to interview Travis a little later on that morning, but he noticed me then. He must remembered me from when I interviewed him at ACS in 2008. This was, and still is, a big deal to me. He knew we had a scheduled interview for that day and he ended up having time right then so we went ahead and got the Inside the Actor’s Studio questioning out of the way.

Because I feel like the underdog pretty much all the time, it felt like a super cool “win” to walk through the garage, past crew members and whoever was around, with a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver who actually REMEMBERED ME. Which is why Travis Kvapil is a super cool guy in my book. He really is genuinely nice and I cannot wait for a Sprint Cup win to come his way. I’ll talk more about him when I post the interview. He was the first driver to answer a particular question a particular way. How’s that for cryptic? :)

I’m in Las Vegas this weekend for Blog World & New Media Expo, but I’m planning on getting a lot of writing done as well. So stay tuned…

Last Thursday I drove seven and half hours down to Southern California for the start of my Auto Club Speedway/Pepsi Max 400 race weekend.

As I was driving I tried to think of new & interesting questions for Tony Stewart. Tony was having an autograph session at the Office Depot in Rancho Cucamonga that day and he had an open media session before he starting signing things for fans. Yet again I found myself having a hard time thinking of more questions for Tony. I really loved how well my first interview went with him that I didn’t want to ruin it by asking more questions and having it be lame.

ask kasey kahne & aj allmendinger your questions

Kasey KahneI’m starting something new this week. SPEED’s TV show, NASCAR Race Hub is giving you the opportunity to interview their guests each week. All you have to do is submit your questions to me and I’ll pass ‘em along to the powers that be. They’ll get the questions answered — on video! — and I’ll post it here for you to view.

Really cool right? And this week you’ve got the chance to ask Kasey Kahne or AJ Allmendinger, ANYTHING you want. So hurry up and submit your questions!!

:)
UPDATE: Submissions are no longer being accepted for this week’s guests. As soon as I get the video of the questions being answered I’ll post it!

spending the weekend at auto club speedway

Jamie McMurray, he's on the pole for the Pepsi Max 400 at Auto Club SpeedwayIt’s only Friday and I already have so much stuff to share with you guys! It’s awesome. :) Needless to say I’m really looking forward to tomorrow and Sunday. David Hasselhoff is singing the National Anthem and, like, 56 couples are renewing their vows along with 16 couples that are getting married on the start/finish line of Auto Club Speedway. Superfun! Oh and there’s a race or two happening. Jamie McMurray (seen at left post qualifying) is on the pole for one of them, the Pepsi Max 400.

Of course I’m not writing a full post because I’m tired and I have to get up early again tomorrow and I didn’t get a full night’s sleep yesterday (my room makes weird noises at night and trains pass by here). But I can tell you that I had fun watching people flip out when they caught sight of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and I interviewed Travis Kvapil, David Gilliland, Marcos Ambrose, Juan Pablo Montoya, Brad Keselowski and Brad Daugherty. Whew! There’s a lot of great content coming up for sure.

Make sure you follow me on Twitter to find out what I’m doing while I’m doing it.

kansas payback is a bitch

No. 16 3M Ford driver Greg Biffle celebrates in Victory Lane after earning his second win of the 2010 season and 16th of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career. (Credit: Jason Smith/Getty Images for NASCAR)Here’s how I feel about the David Reutimann/Kyle Busch incident: Boys will be boys.

LOL :)

I love the idea of throwing that dumb cliche back in the face of people who like to use it to explain away bad behavior.

But seriously, I don’t really care. Reutimann was pissed and he decided to take action. The fact that Kyle is in The Chase is totally irrelevant. Everyone is trying to do the best they can no matter what, if they’re in the top-12 or not. That’s why I hate that Chase commercial where the drivers talk about all the stuff they have to compete against to win the Championship. Never once do they mention the fact that they still have to deal with 42 other drivers, not just 11 other guys contending for the Championship. That’s why winning the Sprint Cup is a big deal. The guys not in the Chase shouldn’t be expected to roll over, on the contrary, they should be getting in the way.

It’ll mean more for the the guy that ultimately wins the thing. :)

Congratulations to Greg Biffle and the No. 16 3M team! I’m so glad the standings within The Chase are still up in the air. Hopefully we can keep it that way for at least a few more races!

to-do list: fontana and blog world expo

Pepsi Max 400 LogoFIRST: I am planning on attending the NASCAR race weekend at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana next week, although there is a small chance I might not make it out there. Please know that I am doing EVERYTHING I can to make it happen.

It’s ridiculous how badly I want/need to go to this race. It’s close enough to me (only 5 short hours) that it’s just a no-brainer and yet enough annoying circumstances can rear their ugly head’s to make my actual attendance slightly “tentative.” Ugh. Anyway, just know that I’m going to be at that race, happy as a clam, writing about driver’s visits to port-a-potties and women wearing inappropriate-for-the-racetrack shoes.

:)

Plus, there are too many things going on that weekend that to miss it would suck big time. For one, there are the weddings taking place at the track before the Sprint Cup Series race on 10/10/10 (which also happens to be Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s birthday) and my life won’t be complete until I get to see Michael Waltrip serve as the Best Man at a stranger’s wedding.

And there’s the matter of doing more driver interviews using the ten questions. So now that I’ve written this out there’s no way in hell I’m not going to this race.

BlogWorld BadgeSECOND: I’m definitely going to be at the 2010 Blog World & New Media Expo in Las Vegas. This year’s BWE is taking place at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center and I’m on a panel in the sports track titled “Women in Sports Media” along with some awesome women: Kathleen Hessert, President of Sports Media Challenge and Nicole LaVoi, Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport & Minnesota Youth Sport Research Consortium. *(see update below)

I met Nicole at Blogs with Balls 3 this year in Chicago and you should really check out her blog about women in sports. I’m a subscriber and there isn’t a post where I’m not saying to myself, “She’s so right!” or “That’s so true!”

I haven’t met Kathleen before but I’m looking forward to it. Just check out this recent interview with her over at Sports Industry Insider. She’s helped many athletes manage their reputations and figure out their social media & web strategies. She’s the “woman who taught Shaquille O’Neal to tweet.” She’s also worked with guys we know like Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, Greg Biffle and Casey Mears.

I had a small hand in putting this panel together in that I gave the idea to the sports track organizers and I’m glad that I did because there are so many things to talk about as it relates to female athletes, journalists and fans. I really feel like female fans get short shrift a lot of the time. It’s really easy to see the male demographic in racing but HELLO, 40% of NASCAR fans are women. What are you doing to engage the women?

Anywhoo, I’m really looking forward to the panel. If you’re involved in blogging, social media and new media in any shape or form (or you want to be) you should attend Blog World. There really is something for everyone (and I’m not getting paid to say this). I always walk away from it with more info and contacts than when I arrived.

UPDATE: I jumped the gun on my post and it turns out that Nicole LaVoi won’t be on the panel with me at Blog World, but Patricia Hannigan, The Golf Girl, will be! Should be a good time.

jimmie johnson’s daughter is already winning

Jimmie Johnson and his wife Chandra play with their daughter Genevieve Marie on the grid prior to the start of Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway.(Credit: Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images for NASCAR)Jimmie Johnson got to celebrate his win of the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway with his wife, Chandra and their new almost 3-month-old baby daughter, Genevieve. It was, as expected, absolutely adorable to see Jimmie looking so lovingly at his daughter.

This is surely Genevieve’s first of many trips to Victory Lane with her daddy. I can’t help but turn this simple beautiful moment into something competitive and so I can’t help but think about how Genevieve has already beaten Jeff Gordon’s 3-year-old daughter, Ella, at something. She got to celebrate with her papa first. It’s silly, I know, and yes, while Ella hasn’t physically been in Victory Lane she did get to celebrate her dad’s win at Texas after the fact that one time, but still it wasn’t the same.

I guess Ella can take solace in the fact that Genevieve won’t remember last Sunday anyway. Although, Ella has a lot to be proud of, she’s accomplished a lot in the last three years. The two wines — a chardonnay and a pinot noir — that her dad named after her won awards and she designed a paint scheme for her dad’s car. So there.

:)

UPDATE: Sarah, an awesome commenter, has corrected me. Ella has been with her dad in victory lane when she was really little. (this photo is proof) I stand corrected, Ella and Genevieve are even! :) Thanks Sarah!

shortcuts: tony stewart kept his childhood pillow (awww)

Rose Berger with Tony StewartThe two finalists in Office Depot’s “Official Small Business of NASCAR” sweepstakes have been chosen and are attending this weekends race at Dover to find out who will be named the “Official Small Business of NASCAR” for 2010. It all depends on where Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart finish in Sunday’s AAA 400.

Normally, I would write more and give you all the details about the finalists (seen at left) but NASCAR’s Andrew Giangola wrote an AWESOME piece about the Tony, Greg and the finalists. It’s really good away from the track stuff. I mean, I really wish I had been at that dinner. Super fun. Anyway, go read the article!

Oh! And below is a nice video about the two finalists, Rose Berger, owner of Professional Cleaning Service in Greer, S.C., and Mike Pagano, owner of PaganoPhoto – Photos by Mike Pagano in Cedar Brook, N.J. The economy’s issues have affected us all in some way and these two finalists have had their fair share, which is why this contest is so great because it helps these small businesses get a leg up.

Again, just read the article. Okay?

:)

In other news…

voila! a superfun chase! (too soon?)

Clint Bowyer celebrates second career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory on Sunday at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H., the first race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. (Credit: Jason Smith/Getty Images for NASCAR)Absolutely loved the first race in The Chase for the Sprint Cup Series Championship! Clint Bowyer won it! Yaaay!

You know what this means? It means that The Chase will not be a predictable bore-fest. It’s going to be fun and intriguing and it’s not going to suck. Of course now that I’ve said that Jimmie Johnson will proceed to win the next 9 races.

Hehe. :)

I slept through the pre-race show ’cause I thought it all started at 10am PST, but that’s when the race started. That meant that I missed the pit road debut of little Genevieve Marie Johnson who is cute as a button (see below)!

dario franchitti (sort of) lives with his mother-in-law

Dario Franchitti and Will Power are still battling for the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Championship. There's only one race left!Things I learned while watching the Indy Japan 300 Saturday night (which was actually Sunday morning in Japan):

1.) Drivers exchange helmets with each other. Cool!

2.) Tony Kanaan only sees his 3-year-old son, Leo, once a month. His son lives in Brazil. I found this piece of news to be distressing because I don’t know how I could live only seeing my child once a month. I know, well I’m deducing, that Tony isn’t with the child’s mother anymore (since he’s dating someone else) but it still sucks right? I guess that’s the best you can do considering his schedule and where the kid lives.

3.) Anthony Joseph Foyt V (That’s number 5!) was born on Saturday to AJ Foyt IV and his wife Casey. More from FoytRacing.com:

Congratulations from everyone at A.J. Foyt Racing to A.J. Foyt IV and his wife Casey on the birth of their first child Anthony Joseph Foyt V. Coming in two weeks ahead of time and with a full head of black hair, Foyt V clocked in at 2:48 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18th in Indianapolis. He weighed 7 lbs. 1 oz and measured 20 inches. Mother and child are doing fine and the proud poppa hasn’t stopped smiling.

4.) Okay, so this tidbit I didn’t learn while watching the race, I found out by watching Oprah (it’s the last season! gah!). Last week Oprah had The Judds, Wynonna and her mom Naomi, on to discuss their comeback/farewell-for-reals-this-time tour they’re starting this year and it came up that the Judd women including Ashley and her husband Dario Franchitti all live next to each other on a 1,000 acre piece of land outside of Nashville, Tennessee. Ashley’s house is only 60 seconds down the road from Naomi’s and Wynonna’s house is 6 minutes from Naomi. I think this is super cool and their land is gorgeous, complete with a river running through it.

5.) How perfect is it that Will Power won the road course championship and Dario Franchitti clinched the oval course championship and there’s only 13 points separating the two of them going into the final race of the season for the overall IZOD IndyCar Championship? Couldn’t have written it better myself. My money is on Will.

chase media day: break out the plaid!

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 15: Carl Edwards, driver of the Aflac car, during the NASCAR Media Day event at the London Hotel on September 15, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by John W. Ferguson/Getty Images)So, I’m guessing nobody called Carl Edwards (or Kurt Busch for that matter) to tell him that the dress code options for the Chase Media Day in New York City this week were two things: plaid shirts or black shirts.

Carl looks like he’s running for president, while the rest of the drivers in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship just look like regular dudes.

I am a big fan of plaid so I applaud Denny Hamlin and Clint Bowyer for their choices. You think they called each other the night before and were all “What are you gonna wear??” Hehe. That idea tickles me.

:)

with this motorcycle i thee wed

Get your “awwww” face ready. A couple from Sebastopol, California (a little town in Northern California that I used to work in) got married at Infineon Raceway today. I’m all for getting married in a place that has meaning for the couple. It’s supercool. Which is another reason why I really wanna see the 10/10/10 weddings at Auto Club Speedway next month during their NASCAR race weekend.

:)

Wedding ceremony at Infineon Raceway

Congrats to the happy motorcylin’ couple!

Sebastopol’s Danielle La Fave and Timothy Duffield enjoyed the ultimate day at the track on Monday – the high-speed couple tied the knot at Infineon Raceway.

The avid motorcycle riders, who met through the North Bay Sport Riders (NBSR) club and spent their first track day together at Infineon Raceway more than one year ago, returned to the track on Monday to exchange vows in the Wine Country Winner’s Circle. The couple enjoyed a morning on track during a Pacific Track Time motorcycle track day before the ceremony.

“We spent our first track day together at Infineon Raceway, which meant a lot to us. It was the first time she had ever ridden on this track, which she had always wanted to do,” said Duffield, 41, the groom.

The ceremony, which began with Duffield and LaFave riding down the aisle on their motorcycles, also included a poem, blessing and a song from friends in the NBSR. The couple traded traditional wedding attire for racing leathers, and were joined by nearly 50 fellow riders for the ceremony.

“It means the world to us to get married here. This is where our relationship started, and there’s no better place to be,” continued LaFave, 40, the bride.

my teeny tiny 2010 championship predictions

Denny Hamlin celebrates winning the Air Guard 400 at Richmond International Raceway, his second victory at his hometown track. (Credit: John Harrelson/Getty Images for NASCAR)While I’m not sure who I “want” to win the Championship this year, I can tell you who I think will win it and who I’m sure definitely will not.

I’ve had a feeling for some time now that Denny Hamlin would claim the 2010 Sprint Cup Series Championship, I’m not entirely sure why I feel that way but it just seems like the right thing. I think this kid is determined and it seems like it’s his time.

Now, on to who I think definitely will not win the Championship and that would be Jimmie Johnson. Not because he’s not capable, a duh he’s won 4 in a row, but because everyone else in the Chase wants it more. I think there has to be something to seeing Jimmie win it every year and I think these guys are psyched and pumped to make sure he doesn’t win a 5th. I just think the other guys want and NEED this Championship more than Jimmie does and therefore they’re going to do everything within their power to make sure they’re tops this year.

jeff gordon and wife attend ‘fashion’s night out: the show’

Jeff Gordon and his wife Ingrid Vandebosch, a former model, attended “Fashion’s Night Out: The Show” at Lincoln Center in New York City last night. It was a ginormous fashion show to kick off New York’s Fashion Week.

Tonight is the actual Fashion’s Night Out “night” where shops all over the world open their doors to shoppers to celebrate fashion and, well, shopping. Why? Because the recession sucks and designers need your money. New York is the home base of sorts for Fashion’s Night Out festivities but events are being held all over. Check out the FNO website for stuff going on your area.

tony stewart wins the ‘everybody’s car was loose 500′

Tony Stewart is congratulated by race runner-up Carl Edwards and Stewart Haas Racing teammate Ryan Newman in Victory Lane at Atlanta Motor Speedway after winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Emory Healthcare. (Credit: Rusty Jarrett/Getty Images for NASCAR)Yea, that’s the whole story. You could have made a drinking game out of the words “loose” and “sideways” and you would of been drunk within the first 10 minutes of the race.

I loved it to much. It was dramatic and people were racing each other and trying not to lose control. I loooooved it. It was hard to watch, which means that it was an awesome race ‘cause I had no idea what was going to happen. It’s amazing there weren’t more wrecks.

How cute was the spat between Ryan Newman and Kasey Kahne? Gosh, I wish I was there. I would have loved to have been in that garage when they rolled in together. I don’t know why I find it so cute to see Kasey angry. Ha!

:)

Congratulations to Tony Stewart and the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice team. I decided that I would only be happy if someone who hadn’t won a race this year won, so I’m totally good with Tony’s trip to Victory Lane.

Annnd another set of congrats to Jamie McMurray and the No. 88 Hellmann’s/BJ’s team for their win in the Nationwide Series on Saturday. That was super huge and awesome for JR Motorsports. I’m so glad Jamie got to win with that team.

So the place where I normally get pictures has no pictures from this weekend yet. I hope it’s yet. As soon as new pictures are available I’ll post ‘em.

helio castroneves and terrell owens are totally bff

Helio Castroneves celebrates winning the Kentucky Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday, September 4, 2010 (credit: IRL)Helio Castroneves won last night’s IZOD IndyCar Series race, the Kentucky Indy 300, at Kentucky Speedway. I only saw Helio in Victory Lane because I was watching the NASCAR Nationwide Series race and it’s extra long post-race coverage.

At any rate, the thing that stuck out the most to me was of course Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Terrell Owens hamming it up in Victory Lane with Helio. You’d think they’d known each other forever. Terrell was taking up so much time the Versus crew had to wait to get their interview with Helio.

Driver Boris Said celebrates his win at the NAPA Auto Parts 200 Nationwide Series NASCAR race in Montreal, August 29, 2010. REUTERS/Shaun Best (CANADA - Tags: SPORT MOTOR RACING)This is a special photo combo post for the Bristol weekend and the Nationwide race in Montreal.

The Montreal race was absolutely awesome. I loved that last lap. I wanted any of those guys to win, Boris Said, Jacques Villeneuve, or Max Papis. But Boris was able to pull out the win over Max. Such a great crazy finish. I, for one, would love to see what would happen if there was a Sprint Cup race at Montreal.

I was disappointed that Boris’ son, with his little blonde mop top, wasn’t on hand to watch his dad win. That would have been such a cute victory lane celebration.

Oh and how kind of freaky was it to watch Jacques breathing so hard in his car during the red flag? I seriously thought he was going to pass out at some point. I’ve never seen anyone breathing like that in a race car. Crazy. But he seemed totally fine after the race, must of been the adrenaline on that last lap.

interview: inside the actor’s studio with chip ganassi

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - JULY 03: Team owner Chip Ganassi stands in the pit box during the Grand-Am Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International Speedway on July 3, 2010 in Daytona Beach, Florida. (Photo by Chris Trotman/Getty Images for ISC)So here’s how this interview came about: My brother-in-law’s brother works with a childhood friend of Chip Ganassi’s. My BIL’s brother told his coworker about me and my blog, and it just so happened that the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway was coming up, and he, Chip’s friend, was going to be at the race and could introduce me to the team owner.

I am super grateful to both men for making this happen. I was excited that I could meet Chip, especially this year when so many wonderful things have happened for Target Chip Ganassi Racing and Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, winning the Daytona 500 with Jamie McMurray, the Indianapolis 500 with Dario Franchitti and the Brickyard 400 with Jamie McMurray.

Incidentally, yesterday was my birthday but it was also declared “Chip Ganassi Day” in Pittsburgh, PA.

I was very nervous meeting Chip, but he was nice and had a good sense of humor about the ITAS questions as you’ll see below.

i’m not dead, i’m just busy turning 30

hehe. :)

Seriously. Today is my birthday. I owe you guys so much content, it’s not funny. I still need to wrap up my time at the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, post stuff from Bristol and Boris Said’s awesome win at Montreal. Oh! And my awesome interview with Chip Ganassi.

I’ve been busy with a little project that I hope will turn into big news, and I’ve been sick and I’m getting over the shock that I’ve been around for 30 years.

30 is a big milestone but I’m thinking that turning 31 next year on August 31st will be even bigger.

:)

danica patrick has a stalker?

EDMONTON, AB - JULY 23: Danica Patrick driver of the GoDaddy.com Andretti Autosport Dallara Honda during the Indy Car Series Honda Indy Edmonton on July 23, 2010 at Edmonton City Centre Airport in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. (Photo by Jonathan Ferrey/Getty Images)Or, at the very least, the creepiest fan I’ve ever encountered.

So here I was thinking that nothing that interesting was going to happen today while I was at Infineon Raceway for the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma weekend. Today was the Fluid Film Pole Day and oh what a pole day it was.

So I was sitting on the wall behind the pit stalls for Dan Wheldon and Danica Patrick at the end of the IZOD IndyCar Series practice. Wheldon on my left, Patrick on my right. I stayed there through the Formula Car Challenge Race and then for the Firestone Indy Lights qualifying sessions. It was during the Indy Lights qualifying sessions that this young man suddenly appeared nearby.

He had a curious little box in his hand and he opened it. Inside of it was clearly a ring you’d give to a lady you want to marry. He opened it and closed it quickly. He seemed as if he was practicing his proposal. He was talking to himself out loud, like he was rehearsing what he was going to say. He was pacing.

At first, for like one minute, I thought that he might be some super sweet & romantic race fan that wanted to propose to his longtime girlfriend around the sport for which they shared a love.

But then I quickly started to think that that wasn’t the case at all. I believed that he wanted to propose to Danica Patrick despite the fact that she’s already married and that her husband was there today.

First, a couple of reminders. If you haven’t already, please fill out the 2010 ‘Fabulous’ Reader Survey. To everyone that’s already taken the survey, thanks a million. I really appreciate all of the kind words and the suggestions! Also, take a millisecond and enter the contest to win a $200 NASCAR.com Superstore gift card.

‘Fabulous’ News has been picking up steam lately, so be sure to check it out for news from teams and sponsors. Good stuff. I also post random photos there as well.

In other news…

JR Motorsports announced today that they’ve signed Aric Almirola to a multi-year deal to drive the No. 88 in the Nationwide Series starting in 2011. I think this is a good fit for Aric and JR Motorsports, and it’s handy to be signing a big deal when you’re about to get married right? :)

“The chance to drive full time in the Nationwide Series with a top caliber team is something I am extremely excited about,” Almirola said.  “I was at the shop yesterday, and Kelley gathered all the employees around to announce our deal. The energy and excitement was addicting. We raced at ORP together a month ago and had a really good run.  There is no reason why we cannot compete like that every race, and there is no reason why we shouldn’t be running for a championship. I would expect nothing less.”

Tony Stewart wears the firesuit that's up for auction at OfficeDepotRacing.com– Now is the time to bid on the firesuit and helmet worn by Tony Stewart at this year’s July 10th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway. Just go to the brand spanking new OfficeDepotRacing.com website.

More deets:

… through August 23, fans can bid on the actual Office Depot Foundation firesuit and helmet worn by Stewart during the July 10 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series™ race at Chicagoland Speedway. Stewart’s No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy featured a special “back-to-school” paint scheme at Chicagoland, and the unique firesuit and helmet were created specifically for that race.

Both items will be autographed by Stewart, and proceeds from the auction will be used to support The Office Depot Foundation’s award-winning National Backpack Program, which provides new backpacks to schools and charitable organizations that work with children in need across the country.

“It was a lot of fun to have the special back-to-school paint scheme on my No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy earlier this summer, and I’m very proud to partner with the Office Depot Foundation on its National Backpack Program,” Stewart said. “I can tell you from experience how rewarding it is to see the look on these kids’ faces when they get a new backpack – it’s an automatic boost of confidence for them and helps them feel ready to take on the new school year just like everybody else. I hope fans will help support this awesome program by participating in the online auction.”

what i missed at m.i.s.

Kevin Harvick and team owner Richard Childress celebrate the win in Victory Lane at Michigan International Speedway.(Credit: Jason Smith/Getty Images for NASCAR)I missed the Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday because I was busy driving two of my nephews (ages 9 and 11) from their home in Los Angeles to my mom’s house in the SF Bay Area. I love my nephews more than words can say but spending 7 hours in a car with them is not something I really want to do again. Who knew that doing word search puzzles could be a competitive thing?? :)

Anyway, I did catch some of the race action from SIRIUS Satellite Radio’s coverage with MRN, but the boys were more interested in hearing music from Drake and, amazingly enough, Katy Perry’s song “California Gurls.”

In between pop music stints I did learn that Kevin Harvick won and that Dale Earnhardt Jr. dropped a couple curse words while being interviewed by ESPN’s Marty Smith.

So this post is going to be super duper photo heavy. Enjoy! :)

racing and the single girl

I was walking through a bookstore the other day, something that has become a routine for me these days, and I caught sight of the book “Become Your Own Matchmaker: 8 Easy Steps for Attracting Your Perfect Mate” by Patti Stanger.

Patti is a professional matchmaker and she has her own company called the Millionaire’s Club, where as the name pretty much says it she finds love for dateless millionaires. She’s also got her own reality show on Bravo, called “The Millionaire Matchmaker,” which is how I came to know of her.

Anyway, Patti is known for being super straightforward, cutting to chase and being sort of Simon Cowell when it comes to telling people what’s holding them back from finding true love. It’s one of the reasons why I like her show so much, she’s just honest with people whether they like it or not.

So the reason I’m bringing up Patti and her book is because I started to flip through it and came upon the page that you can see below. It’s from her section on where to find dateable single men. This is of EXTREME interest to me since I’m a single woman who is always on the lookout for eligible bachelors that don’t act like the dudes you see on the show “The Bachelor.” Ya know, a guy that actually wants to be in a relationship, but I digress.

ashley judd wins at mid-ohio, oops, I mean dario franchitti

Dario Franchitti and his wife, Ashley Judd, celebrate his win at Mid-OhioDario Franchitti held off Will Power to win the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio presented by Westfield Insurance last weekend. But I don’t think Will got too down in the dumps about the whole thing since he was able secure ownership of the first ever Mario Andretti Road Championship Trophy.

Legendary racecar driver Mario Andretti will be on hand at the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma next week to present the trophy to Will. As we all know Sonoma was the scene of Mario’s grandson’s, Marco Andretti, first ever (and so far, only) IndyCar win. I was there to see it and I really, really, really, really hope that Marco can find some magic and get a win at Infineon Raceway again. Plus, I always think it’s adorable to see Mario, Michael (Mario’s son, Marco’s father) and Marco together.

I’ll take that or Graham Rahal winning, or Simona De Silvestro winning. I’m also willing to accept Milka Duno finishing higher than 20th place. OK, now I’m being greedy.

hehe :) I kid, I kid.

And since I brought up the topic of Mario Andretti, how cute is he in those Honda commercials? I love it when the “regular dude” takes Mario for a ride in a Honda, after Mario has taken the guy around a track in a two-seater IndyCar, and Mario says “I’m hungry.” (video below)

Francesco Dracone

Ladies, this is Francesco Dracone. You’re welcome. :)

Also, Francesco will be one of eleven drivers testing at Infineon Raceway on Friday. I will be there as well, with bells on.

can we have another watkins glen race?

(Left to right) Juan Pablo Montoya and crew chief Brian Pattie spray each other with champagne in Watkins Glen International's Victory Lane after Pattie claimed his first victory atop the box in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on Sunday at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, N.Y. (Credit: Rusty Jarrett/Getty Images for NASCAR)It’s funny when you don’t realize you want something so bad until there’s a chance it can actually happen. For me that was the possibility of AJ Allmendinger getting his first win at Watkins Glen yesterday. He was chargin’, running up front with those guys and it really seemed like it could of been his day.

Well, he didn’t win, Mr. Juan Pablo Montoya did, but I had a lot of fun cheering for AJ. I don’t have anything against Juan Pablo, but during the race when I was imagining who would have a better, more fun, reaction to winning in Victory Lane AJ won hands down. You know he would be waaaaaay more excited and happy and thankful if he’d won that race than Juan was. I love a first-time win, what can I say?

Anyway, congrats to Juan Pablo and the No. 42 Target Chevy team. And bonus congrats to crew chief Brian Pattie for his first Sprint Cup Series win, it was sweet to see his emotions post-race.

Even though I’ve never been to Watkins Glen I think it’s beautiful there. From what I can see on TV it looks fabulous and I really, really wanna go to the next race there. Hopefully that’ll happen next year. Watkins Glen is right up there with Bristol, Daytona and Talladega as the tracks that I want to visit the most.

I know the drivers might not agree but I really wish there were more road course races in the Sprint Cup Series schedule. I love ‘em. It jumbles everything, in terms of the race itself and the points standings. I guess as a Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan I shouldn’t wish for that but I have confidence in my driver no matter what, and one day that guy will prevail at a road course.

:)

Freightliner Trucks announced last week that they’ve extended their relationship with NASCAR, as the the Official Hauler of NASCAR®, through 2015. So this proves that things aren’t all bad everywhere, right? (And that someone will sponsor this blog?)

:)

Anywhoo, check out the details of Freightliner’s partnership with NASCAR and their Run Smart Hauler Challenge that I had no idea existed:

“We’ve enjoyed a wonderful partnership with NASCAR over the last five years and look forward to continuing the relationship in the years to come,” said Melissa Clausen, director, product marketing, Freightliner Trucks. “NASCAR continues to allow us to showcase our trucks and equipment to a nationwide group of loyal NASCAR fans, as well as directly to our customer base who love the sport.”

“Freightliner’s premium product lineup has been hauling our NASCAR trailers week in and week out for many seasons,” said Jim O’Connell, NASCAR vice president of corporate marketing and international development. “NASCAR is proud to have Freightliner as an official partner and to put our trust in their haulers every week across multiple series. We are excited to extend this partnership for many more years.”

getting to know you: 2010 ‘fabulous’ reader survey

I hope you’re all having a great week so far! Awhile ago (maybe a year or two?) I created a reader survey that helped put things in perspective. But it’s time for an update! Plus, I have new questions I’m curious about. All of this information is important to help me grow this blog and to help prove to potential sponsors that there’s value in partnering with me.

So if you’re like me and enjoy filling out surveys, have at it! It should be fun and easy peasy, I wouldn’t expect it to take longer than 5 minutes to complete. Thank you in advance!!

i (heart) the tony stewart burger king commercial

I have a deep and seriously irrational love for the Clocked in with Tony Stewart & the Burger King Smoky Cheddar Steakhouse XT commercial.

It makes me smile every time I see it. Maybe it’s because it’s, like, the only NASCAR-related ad I ever see while I’m watching non-NASCAR-related television shows. Or maybe it’s because I adore the expression on Tony’s face when he says, “Just a sandwich or the meal?”

Or do I love that woman who recognizes Tony and tells him she loves him? I think it’s all of that. I love it!

pocono: it’s tricky, tricky, tricky

(Credit: Chris Trotman/Getty Images for NASCAR)They don’t call it “The Tricky Triangle” for nothing. The Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway was one crazy race, but in the end I’m so incredibly glad/relieved that Elliott Sadler was able to walk away from that gnarly crash, as well as Kurt Busch. Pocono has some serious work to do to make that backstretch far less treacherous in the future.

It’s amazing how you can go from winning one race one day to just making it out alive from another one another day. I’m super stoked and happy for Elliott that he won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Pocono Mountains 125 race on Saturday.

Congratulations go out to Greg Biffle and the No. 16 3M Ford team for winning the Sprint Cup Series race. It was the perfect way to wish team owner Jack Roush a speedy recovery from his accident. He was upgraded to fair condition last night at Mayo Clinic, so that win had to have been the best medicine.

shortcuts: mcmurray tries on axe’s twist, i answer the ‘actor’s studio’ questions

The awesome guys over at NASCAR This Week with Monte Dutton asked me to submit a guest post as Monte was out on vacation for a while. I obliged and they’ve posted the article on their site. Go check it out. I answered the 10 Inside the Actor’s Studio questions. It’s a fun thing to do, I really had to think about my answers more than I thought I would. Let me know what you think.

In other news…

Jamie McMurray will be driving a supercool, never-been-done-before paint scheme this weekend at Pocono. Jamie’s No. 1 AXE Twist Chevy will feature paint that changes color based on the temperature outside. The changing colors of the AXE logo simulates how AXE’s new fragrance for men changes over time. That sounds really interesting, I wanna know how AXE’s fragrance smells and how it changes. Someone send me a dude (preferably hot, tall and single) that I can test this with. kthx.

– Phoenix International Raceway has partnered with Queers4Gears.com to offer a special ticket offer to the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender) community. Ticket prices start at $25 for PIR’s November 14th NASCAR Kobalt Tools 500.

International Raceway (PIR) has partnered with Queer4Gears.com to offer special discounted tickets to their Lesbian and Gay race fans to attend the NASCAR Kobalt Tools 500 on Sunday, November 14, 2010. With this special discount, admission for the race starts at $25.00.

The track has been working on this promotion with Queer4Gears.com, a website devoted to gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and trans-gendered, also collectively known as LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender) NASCAR fans.

PIR recognizes that they have a very diverse fan base and they want to reach out to all of them. While covering the Subway Fresh Fit 500 in April, Queer4Gears.com founder, Michael Myers began conversations with Phoenix International Raceway officials.

To his knowledge, Myers said that this will be the first time that any NASCAR sanctioned facility has reached out to fans in the L.G.B.T. community.

“Just a small push like including the L.G.B.T. community on the official web site of Phoenix International Raceway is a step in the right direction for uniting the different stereotypes that surround the racetracks on a weekly basis” said Queer4Gears.com founder Michael Myers.  “I applaud Phoenix International Raceway for what they are trying to do and it definitely will speak volumes towards the gay race fans. It is a big first step.”

helio castroneves drops the nice guy routine for 10 minutes

Helio Castroneves at Edmonton 2010Things had been relatively quiet during the Honda Indy Edmonton IZOD IndyCar Series race, that is, until those final laps.

Helio Castroneves was caught blocking (in this scenario it’s a no-no) his teammate Will Power which to me looked like the slightest of blocking, but whatever the officials know better than me. Plus Will did say in his post-race interview that Helio blocked him and well you’re not supposed to do that.

So Helio, who finished first, didn’t win the race and proceeded to go apeshit when he got out of his car. That had to have been one of the awesomest racing-related tantrums I’ve ever heard/seen on live television. The video is below and it gets good at about the 3:55 mark.

My only gripe was that Versus didn’t cut to Helio sooner. They should of had a straight shot on him the entire time, why bother talking to Scott Dixon, who would have been second but ended up winning the race because of the penalty levied against Helio. I’m sure Scott was grateful (who wouldn’t be?), but who cares what he had to say. Helio was where the action was at.

jamie mcmurray makes roush fenway drivers wish they drove for ganassi, too

Jamie McMurray celebrates his Brickyard 400 victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He became the third driver to win the Brickyard and the Daytona 500 in the same season. (Credit: John Harrelson/Getty Images for NASCAR)I’m kidding! Calm down Roush Fenway Racing supporters. I was just making a funny. :)

But seriously, super huge congratulations to Jamie McMurray for winning the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway yesterday. Kudos to him and his team for winning a race that further cements a place for him in NASCARs history.

Now, can I talk about Victory Lane or Winner’s Circle at Indy? It’s really lame. It seems like a complete afterthought, like they finished making the hugh jass pagoda and then were all, “Ohh, where are we gonna do Victory Lane? Let’s wedge it over there since we made the stage for the anthem and the command to start engines needlessly large and round.”

It makes me feel squished and I’m not even there. It’s so awkward, why not just do everything on the track? Ok, just had to get that off of my chest it makes me mental every year for the Indy 500 and the Brickyard.

And speaking of Victory Lane how cute was Jamie when he kissed his wife’s stomach? Christy McMurray is pregnant with their first child who is due to arrive in December. So adorable. I’m going out on a limb and calling a set of twins for them. I have no proof, obviously, other than I think someone should have twins.

(Photo by Jason Smith/Getty Images for NASCAR)Everyday, at least that’s what it feels like, I get press releases or newsy items about teams, sponsors, charities and drivers in the world of racing. I probably get around to posting like 10% of it. It’s not because it’s bad or uninteresting it’s just that I don’t have time to post ‘em all. So that’s why I created a new sub-section here for The Fast and the Fabulous called ‘Fabulous’ News. It’s where you, your friends and PR people can post any kind of newsy news and press releases for everyone to read.

This way you don’t have to wait for me to post ‘em. They still have to be approved before they’re shown on the site but they won’t go through my filter so it’s still a lot better than languishing in my email box.

Of course, if something piques my interest I’ll still highlight it here in the main area of The Fast and the Fabulous.

an open letter to crew members

Dear Crew Members,

In light of the latest Nationwide Series crew member that has been suspended for violating NASCAR’s substance abuse policy, all I can say is this:

STOP USING DRUGS! And if you haven’t used any drugs, good for you!

Thanks,
xoxo Valli :)

(Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images for NASCAR)The second Brad Keselowski got into Carl Edwards in turn 1 at Gateway International Raceway on Saturday I knew it was only a matter of opportunity before Carl got Brad back. So I wasn’t surprised in the least when Carl nudged Brad before the checkered flag.

Maybe what I’ve thought about Carl is all wrong. Maybe he’s just an “Eddie Haskell” smiling and being the nice “Aw shucks” guy in front of the cameras, doing all the right things you need to do to get a ride, get a sponsor, and get fans. But then once it’s time for the competition he’s clearly out for himself, he’s out for the win and I think in the case of Brad Keselowski it doesn’t help that Carl has had many issues with him in the past. Oh and the fact that it was a race at his home track also didn’t help matters. He couldn’t let this win slip out of his hands if he had a shot at it.

lady gaga poses for nascar, sort of

It’s become an age old question: What do you do during a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series off-weekend? Well, it’s never really and off-weekend, there’s always some form of racing on television and this weekend is no different. There’s the Nationwide Series, the Camping World Truck Series and that other racing league, the IZOD IndyCar Series. They all offer something different and fun, but it’s not quite enough. I guess we’re spoiled in that sense, we want it all, all the time.

Anyway, I thought it’d be fun to brainstorm some other activities you could partake in in the regular, non-racing world while you wait for Sprint Cup Series action to return:

HOLLYWOOD - AUGUST 10: Actress Angelina Jolie arrives at the premiere of Weinstein Co.'s 'Inglorious Basterds' held at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on August 10, 2009 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)1.) Write a screenplay for a NASCAR drama starring your favorite actors and actresses. I started thinking about a film with Ben Affleck as the super hot and cocky veteran driver on a losing streak and Robert Pattinson as the super hot and young rookie who’s made the jump from Formula 1 to NASCAR and is on a hot winning streak. There would of course be their love interests, Ben’s wife played by me Angelina Jolie, is super supportive but has grown tired of his ego and is on a mission to show him what it means to be a winner on and off the track. Robert’s character will be single (of course!) but will nurse a crush on the hottest female driver in NASCAR, whose already won one Nationwide Series title and is looking to score big in the Cup series, played by Blake Lively.

Clearly I’ve got the synopsis ready all someone needs to do is pay to me to finish it and we can start filming! Yee!! Actually, now that I just wrote that out I really want to see this film happen. I’d be particularly interested in the casting process. Maybe we could get George Clooney to play a team owner?? Hmm.

(Photo by Bryan Bedder/Getty Images for Tribeca Film Festival)I didn’t attend the premiere of “Racing Dreams”, the movie I told you all to go see ASAP, but there are photos from the event in Charlotte in May and the film’s debut at the Tribeca Film Festival last year where it won Best Documentary Film. I know this is late but better late than never I always say. Plus it’s another opportunity for me to remind you guys to figure out a way to see this awesome film.

And I’ll be honest about the fact that I also enjoy getting to look at photos of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who was a producer on the film. I think I’m going to add meeting him to my list of things to do before I die. I’m serious. Have you seen his arms? Holy… Okay, I’m stopping. If you’re an AJ Allmendinger fan you’ll enjoy these pics too, he’s wearing a suit! And there’s bonus Kasey Kahne.

Go see “Racing Dreams”! And if the film isn’t showing in your area why not tell your local theater they should carry it.

reutimann rules chicagoland, ‘baby j’ gets a name

JOLIET, IL - JULY 10, 2010: David Reutimann (00) wins the LifeLock.com 400 race at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, IL.People always love to talk about NASCAR needs, ‘cause NASCAR always needs something, I guess. I never like writing or talking about stuff like that because I don’t think NASCAR is in a dire situation for anything. So what’s the point of talking about what would help it if I don’t think it needs help?

With that being said, if NASCAR does need something right now it would be what happened last night. David Reutimann won the LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway and while the race as a whole was kinda boring, it was pure awesomeness to see David win a race without the help of weather issues for the first time. He and his No. 00 Aaron’s Dream Machine team won the race fair and square. I loved seeing the emotion in his face and that of his crew chief Rodney Childers. Rodney apologized for all of his emotion while talking to the TNT crew, but he shouldn’t have. He earned that win and he should let those feelings roll, he earned it.

And don’t forget to re-read my Inside the Actor’s Studio interview with David. hehe. :)

interview: inside the actor’s studio with elliott sadler

LOUDON, NH - JUNE 26: Elliott Sadler, driver of the Stanley Ford, walks to the garage during practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series LENOX Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on June 26, 2010 in Loudon, New Hampshire. (Photo by Drew Hallowell/Getty Images for NASCAR)Meeting and interviewing Elliott Sadler, driver of the No. 19 Stanley Ford for Richard Petty Motorsports, was fun. Plain and simple fun. He’s a funny guy, very personable and clearly in love with his 5-month-old son, Wyatt. In addition to asking him those same 10 questions from ITAS, I asked him about being a new father and how, if at all, it’s changed his approach to racing.

“No,” said Elliott. “My feeling about racing has not changed at all other than I’m more determined now than ever because I don’t want my son to think I’m a failure. That’s the biggest thing. I take more things to heart. When we run bad I take it a lot worse now than when I did before he was born just because I don’t want him to think that his dad couldn’t do this or shouldn’t do this.”

When he said that I had, like, 50 internal responses going on at the same time. First, I wanted to tell him that his son is going to love him no matter what place he finishes in a race. Then at the same time I was, like, “For the love of god please let him win a race!!” It broke my heart a little bit, if I’m being honest. I wasn’t expecting him to be that candid. I know Elliott can win and maybe getting back with his former crew chief Todd Parrott will help that happen sooner than later.

What is your favorite word? Awesome

What is your least favorite word? Trouble

What turns you on? Being at home, being around my family. I love being from a small town and just being back at home with all my friends and family. It just seems like we never have a bad time, everything’s always going in the right direction.

What turns you off? Any bad Sundays or any frustrating Sunday is a big, big turn off for me.

What sound or noise do you love? The ocean. I go to sleep to it every night with my sound machine. I love it.

What sound or noise do you hate? Alarm clock. It’s always too early.

What is your favorite curse word? The F-bomb.*

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? I would have loved to be have been a professional basketball player. I just love that sport. I love following it. It’s a game I’ve always been intrigued by.

What profession would you not like to do? Hockey. I wouldn’t want to do hockey ‘cause I can’t ice skate. I tried ice skating when I was, like, 17 or 18 years old and my butt hurt for a month.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? Thank god you made it!

*It should be noted that Elliott polled a bunch of people in the hauler on what cuss word he used the most before settling on his favorite. That was funny.

chandra and jimmie johnson welcome “baby j”

Fontana, CA - February 21, 2010: Jimmie Johnson takes the checkered flag for Auto Club 500.Congratulations to Chandra and Jimmie Johnson on the birth of their baby girl yesterday! They’ve yet to nail down her name so for now they’re calling her “Baby J.” Since they haven’t decided yet maybe everybody should start offering unsolicited ideas. It’s so funny, the baby is here so there’s no drama about that anymore but there’s sill suspense about what her name will be. Can’t wait to find out.

:)

Chandra and Jimmie Johnson welcomed a baby girl Wednesday, July 7 at 1:44 p.m. ET in Charlotte, NC. She weighed 6 lbs., 14 oz. and measured 19.5″ long. Dad offered that she is absolutely beautiful and affectionately referred to her as “Baby J” as the proud parents have yet to decide on a name. While commenting that sleep was at a minimum last night, he is extremely happy about getting to spend time with his girls before leaving for the race weekend in Chicago.

interview: inside the actor’s studio with aj allmendinger

CONCORD, NC - MAY 22: AJ Allmendinger, driver of the #43 Best Buy Ford, stands on the grid prior to the start of the NASCAR Sprint Showdown at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 22, 2010 in Concord, North Carolina. (Photo by Rusty Jarrett/Getty Images for NASCAR)At Infineon I interviewed fellow Bay Area native AJ Allmendinger, asking him ten questions from Inside the Actor’s Studio and he had some good answers.

AJ drives the No. 43 Best Buy Ford Fusion for Richard Petty Motorsports and he was a very nice & very funny guy. There is a photo of me with AJ but I have made an executive decision to not post it for the very simple reason that I look like crap in it. My eyes were closed too. So I’m sure you all understand why I can’t post it. But wait till I post my interview with Elliott Sadler, that photo came out great. I look respectable in that one. :)

Without further adieu, here are AJ’s answers:

helio and tony blow their vuvuzelas, doesn’t help brazil

Will Power finished 1st at the Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen, Ryan Briscoe finished 2nd and Dario Franchitti finished 3rd (photo credit: IRL)Will Power, whose name continues to make me smile after all this time, won the Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen this weekend.

On Friday all of the Brazilian IndyCar drivers gathered to watch Brazil play The Netherlands in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Brazil lost, which sucks (I’m over the World Cup since the US is out of it — just being honest here), but there were some awesome photos (see below) of Helio Castroneves in some heinous glasses and Tony Kanaan blowing his vuvuzela.

Ryan Hunter ReayRyan Hunter-Reay (right), along with Andretti Autosport, announced that they’ve secured enough sponsorship money to continue Ryan’s #37 entry through the rest of the 2010 season. This is great news and to make it even sweeter the team has put together a new program called “Racing For Cancer” to raise money for cancer research.

Ryan’s mother, Lydia, died last year in November from colon cancer and he’s dedicating this racing season to her. For more information go to www.racingforcancer.org. You can also follow them on Twitter @RacingForCancer

Among Ryan’s sponsors for the remainder of the 2010 season is AirTran Airways. I’m noting this because once upon a time I wrote to Southwest Airlines asking if they’d sponsor me and they said they couldn’t because they make a point of not sponsoring things that can crash. Kudos to AirTran Airways for taking a chance and sponsoring a great driver anyway. :)

if you were able to finish the coke zero 400 you still won

Kevin Harvick celebrates winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida on July 3, 2010. UPI Photo/Sam Bush Photo via NewscomThe Coke Zero 400 was fun? I guess that’s the right word to describe a night that was full of crashy-crashes that seemed to take out, like, the entire field of cars. Only 17 out of 43 cars completed all 166 laps of the race. And that’s why Daytona will always be one of my absolute favorite tracks.

Congratulations to Kevin Harvick and the #29 crew for pulling out the win. I’m happy for them but I was actually hoping Clint Bowyer would be the Richard Childress Racing driver to run away with it. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be for Clint just yet.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished 4th which catapulted him into the top-12 in the points standings. Now all he needs to do is just STAY THERE. Seriously, please, just stay RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE.

I’d like to remind you guys that my Wiley X sunglasses contest is still going on, you’ve got until July 9th to submit your entry! The prize is worth $150! I think this is the most expensive thing I’ve ever given away on this site.

:)

(Photo by Todd Warshaw/Getty Images)Here’s a new contest for you to enter, the Coke Zero Fan 400. Here are the official deets:

The Coke Zero Fan 400 is the first-ever race-within-a-race that allows fans to help their favorite Coca-Cola Racing Family drivers win by simply “liking” them on CokeZero.com. As drivers accumulate “votes” online they move up in the race standings.

Fans who vote for the driver who wins the Coke Zero Fan 400 earn a chance to receive a free 20-ounce Coke Zero to celebrate the win. In addition, Coke Zero will donate $10,000 to the NASCAR Foundation on behalf of the winner of the online race.

Each member of the Coca-Cola Racing Family competing in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway on July 3 also will participate in the Fan 400. Fans can begin voting for their favorite drivers on CokeZero.com today. Voting ends following the finish of the Coke Zero 400.

Now, here’s the fun part. Drivers like Denny Hamlin, David Ragan, Clint Bowyer and Jeff Burton made videos imploring fans to vote for them. I’ve found Jeff Burton’s to be the most LOL inducing. :) See for yourself after the jump!

dale jr. wins at daytona and on facebook

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - JULY 02: Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the Wrangler Chevrolet, hugs crew chief Tony Eury Jr. in victory lane after winning the NASCAR Nationwide Series Subway Jalapeno 250 at Daytona International Speedway on July 2, 2010 in Daytona Beach, Florida. (Photo by Rusty Jarrett/Getty Images for NASCAR)Dale Earnhardt Jr. won last night’s Nationwide Series race, the Subway Jalapeno 250 Powered by Coca-Cola, driving the No. 3 Wrangler Chevrolet. It was a huge moment and a great night, a fitting tribute to Dale Earnhardt.

I couldn’t sit down for the last 10 laps! The best part for me was Tony Eury Jr.’s (Dale Jr’s crew chief) reaction to the win. Seeing him dip his head and become emotional made me cry. I know that there’s some redemption value for Dale Jr. with this win but I think it’s bigger for Tony Eury Jr. Especially since he and Dale no longer work together on the #88 team in the Sprint Cup Series. It felt like it meant so much more to see them win together again, to prove that they could do it after all this time.

So, in addition to last night Dale racked up another win of a different kind. He won the bet between him, Dwight Howard, BJ Upton and Reggie Bush in the adidas “Every Team Needs a Fan” contest. He gathered the most fans for the US soccer team and so Dwight, BJ and Reggie all had to wear Dale’s gear. See the video below. I love those shirts. I want one!

i know one person who didn’t drink the danica kool-aid

Tony Kanaan in victory lane after winning the Iowa Corn Indy 250 on Sunday, June 20, 2010 (photo credit: Shawn Gritzmacher/IRL)The last IZOD IndyCar Series race, the Iowa Corn Indy 250 presented by Pioneer, was the same weekend as the NASCAR Toyota/SaveMart 350 at Infineon Raceway. So of course I didn’t watch it ’cause I was busy at the track, which sucks because I didn’t get to see Tony Kanaan finally end his 2-year losing streak.

While I didn’t watch the race I did read the post-race quotes from Tony and his teammates at Andretti Autosport. I thought it was pretty telling that all of his teammates, except Danica Patrick, made a point of congratulating Tony. Very interesting. I guess Tony and Danica still have some sort of rift going on (He did say she needed to change her attitude) and who knows how that’s going to play out. Whatever the deal is I thought it was lame for Danica to not, at the very least, say something about how Tony’s win was great for the organization, ‘cause that’s just what you do. Duh.

“I have to thank my team and the entire 7-Eleven crew.  They did a great job. I had a great car. I have to thank my teammates, Marco (Andretti) and Ryan (Hunter-Reay), who came over after qualifying. I was very disappointed. I made a mistake during qualifying and I was pretty down. They talked to me for 45 minutes and cheered me up. Marco gave me a little bit of his setup and Ryan actually helped me with the setup, putting it together for today. It was a great job as a team and it feels good.”

– Tony Kanaan

“We had an awesome day. We should have been on the podium with Tony today. We had an incident on pit lane and got black-flagged for it. We had to fight our way back up to the top 10. We had the Ethanol USA-Team IZOD car running in the top three. I’m really disappointed in the end. It should have been a great day for us. Congratulations to Tony; he deserves this for sure.”

–Ryan Hunter-Reay

“It’s definitely a disappointment to start third and finish where we did. The handling for the Venom car just didn’t make sense. We made all the right adjustments and we were still too loose. I wouldn’t be surprised if we end up finding something broken on the car.  We just weren’t able to make it happen today on the ’26′ side, but I’m happy for my teammate (Tony Kanaan) and the ’11′ crew.”

– Marco Andretti

“It was a challenging race for the GoDaddy car. We had a good car, but the longer the race went on, the more difficult the car got, handling-wise. I wish we had a better day, but we’ll take a top-10 finish.”

– Danica Patrick

why does jimmie johnson have to win everything??

(Left to right) Crew chief Chad Knaus talks with Jimmie Johnson before the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series LENOX Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Sunday in Loudon, N.H. (Credit: Rusty Jarrett/Getty Images for NASCAR)I mean, really. Let’s recap… He’s very good looking. He’s married to a model. He’s gonna be a daddy. He’s making millions of dollars as a race car driver. He’s won an unprecedented 4 Sprint Cup Series Championships in a row. He’s got the smartest crew chief. He’s just won two races in a row. He won the Pepsi Refresh Project competition he was in versus Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Sheesh! Jimmie, knock it off! :) I kid, I kid.

Actually, now that I read that, if Jimmie ever feels down (why would he?) he can read that paragraph and it should perk him right up again.

CONCORD, NC - MAY 21: Regan Smith, driver of the #78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet, stands on the grid during qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Showdown at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 21, 2010 in Concord, North Carolina. (Photo by John Harrelson/Getty Images)Regan Smith drives the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and I got to meet him during the race weekend at Infineon Raceway. Unfortunately, his first road course in three years didn’t end very well, he got caught up in that gnarly crash on the frontstretch and walked away with a fractured wrist. He’s currently 30th in the points standings but hopes to end the year at least in 25th. It may not sound like a big deal but for a team that’s growing and learning to work together ending the year with a slew of top-20, and hopefully top-15, finishes would be great accomplishments.

“Where we started at to where we are now we’ve made some huge gains and we knew that’s what we needed to do coming into this year,” said Smith. “We’ve had a lot of changes, a lot of new people and a lot of stuff that was different for us than last year. So I feel good about where we are right now. I feel like the coming weeks are really going to be good for us, step us up another notch in the garage from where we are right now.”
