saturday in fontana: kids run the garage

Saturday in Fontana started out with Nationwide Series qualifying. Heather and I hung out in the media bull pen area and watched as the cars came through. It was pretty routine so this is a good time to talk about the children I saw in the garage that weekend. There were TONS of them. The new NASCAR rule allowing kids in the garage has made a big impact because I’ve never seen so many little boys and girls getting photos and autographs.

last friday in fontana: an impromptu kasey kahne interview

Thursday evening in Fontana, after I checked into my hotel just down the street from the race track, I discovered I forgot my cell phone charger at home. So I went to a Best Buy down the street to get another one. Then in the morning I woke up and found that I had left the pouch that holds all of my cords, USB drives and–most importantly–my digital recorder that still had a bunch of interviews on it from Las Vegas that I had yet to transcribe. I made a silent prayer that it was somewhere safe and then headed back to Best Buy to buy another one ’cause I had interviews to do that day.

shortcuts: tony stewart kept his childhood pillow (awww)

Rose Berger with Tony StewartThe two finalists in Office Depot’s “Official Small Business of NASCAR” sweepstakes have been chosen and are attending this weekends race at Dover to find out who will be named the “Official Small Business of NASCAR” for 2010. It all depends on where Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart finish in Sunday’s AAA 400.

Normally, I would write more and give you all the details about the finalists (seen at left) but NASCAR’s Andrew Giangola wrote an AWESOME piece about the Tony, Greg and the finalists. It’s really good away from the track stuff. I mean, I really wish I had been at that dinner. Super fun. Anyway, go read the article!

Oh! And below is a nice video about the two finalists, Rose Berger, owner of Professional Cleaning Service in Greer, S.C., and Mike Pagano, owner of PaganoPhoto – Photos by Mike Pagano in Cedar Brook, N.J. The economy’s issues have affected us all in some way and these two finalists have had their fair share, which is why this contest is so great because it helps these small businesses get a leg up.

Again, just read the article. Okay?

In other news…

get married at auto club speedway

Wedding Bouquet from Paulas Flowers of Old Basing (Flickr photo by Christopher_Hawkens)This might be the greatest race weekend promotion EVER. Why? Because it’s right up my alley, I love a wedding. Actually I love any event, but weddings are awesome because there are so many details to plan and there are a million different ways you can personalize them. Oh and there’s that whole love thing, too.

I love that Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. has taken full advantage of the new wedding craze of getting married on a perfectly numerically matched date. Last year it was all about getting hitched on 09/09/09, this year it’s 10/10/10 and next year it’ll be 11/11/11. Got it? Anyway, these types of dates have become super popular. And now for the NASCAR fans out there looking for a supercool and unique way to get married Auto Club Speedway has figured it all out for you.

You’ll have the opportunity to get married, or renew your vows, right on the start/finish line of ACS before the start of the Pepsi 400. If that wasn’t enough NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip will serve as your Best Man and Miss Sprint Cup will serve as your Maid of Honor, with ACS president Gillian Zucker doing the officiating.

There are three packages to choose from, all of the details are below. I’m totally planning on being at the Pepsi 400 this year, so I’m really looking forward to seeing all of the couples tie the knot. I know people are going to want to go really casual for this but I still think you should dress it up. Toss the big ballgown and go for a nice tea length dress. That would be super sweet.

Now if only “Say Yes to the Dress,” or “My Fair Wedding with David Tutera” would sponsor a car that weekend it’d be perfection! :)

the auto club 500 was a race, yep, a race

Earning his fifth victory at Auto Club Speedway, Jimmie Johnson crosses the finish line in the No. 48 Lowe's/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 500. (Credit: Jeff Gross/Getty Images)The Auto Club 500 was, uhm, a race that happened last weekend. I don’t have too much to say about it because to be perfectly honest with you I’ve had a bunch of other stuff on my mind; stuff that I hope to get to tell you about very soon.

And really, not that much happened in the race, I mean, aside from Carl Edwards still calling his soon to be born baby daughter “it” (which I’m sure is just a symptom of being a first time parent and the reality hasn’t set in yet), Ella Gordon continuing to be one of the most adorable kids on the planet, and Kevin Harvick giving the greatest post-race quote in NASCAR history — everything else was just “eh.”

I won’t be at Las Vegas this weekend, which sucks, but I know there’ll be more races in my future. More to come about that later.

So without further adieu I give you photo fun time from Auto Club Speedway:

shortcuts: nascar media day shenanigans

So, omigosh, there’s news! Jeff Gordon and his wife Ingrid are expecting their second child!! Woo-hoo! Why am I this excited about a stranger’s pregnancy?? I dunno! But I hope it’s a boy ’cause that’d be adorable.

In general, aren’t you all stoked that the 2010 NASCAR season is upon us? Budweiser Shootout on Saturday! It’s all starting up again and it’s fun. Although, all the PR emails I’ve been receiving this week have been crazy, I need, like, a day to just read everything.

And speaking of media, today was NASCAR Media Day where all the drivers were attacked by about 300 members of the various media outlets from all over. NASCAR.com had this funny little video clip show of the day’s activities.
